Tue June 17 - NWO Innovation hosting members of Thunder Bay Repair Cafe 5-7 at the Foundry - lead their Tech Meet-up. All are welcome!

Fed's launched a consultation on Right to Repair in June of last year, survey June - Sept then industry round-tables
https://www.canada.ca/en/innovation-science-economic-development/news/2024/06/government-of-canada-launches-consultation-on-right-to-repair-to-better-meet-canadian-consumers-needs.html

Last Sept Canada passed Right to Repair law allowing individuals and companies to by-pass copy-written computer coded "locks" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/legislation-1.7380696

Concerns these new laws can be a false promise: up to you to figure out how to repair, and if you do you can't tell anyone else how to do the same repair. And doesn't address the "planned obsolesence" weak-link issue
https://h2compliance.com/canadas-right-to-repair/

In Quebec since 2023: Planned obsolescence is now illegal, thanks to the passage of Bill 29, “an Act to protect consumers from planned obsolescence and to promote the durability, repairability and maintenance of goods.” The law prohibits planned obsolescence techniques, introduces a new legal warranty for appliances and computing devices, and mandates the availability of spare parts and information.

https://www.repair.org/world compares to more advanced communities globally: European Union last year " mandates reasonable prices for spare parts, extends repair obligations for certain products beyond the legal guarantee, and bans software practices that obstruct independent repairs. However, its narrow scope—limited to specific household products—means many consumer goods, especially short-lived electronics, remain uncovered. Additionally, vague definitions of "reasonable" pricing and exemptions for intellectual property concerns leave room for manufacturers to continue anti-repair practices."

In France since 2020 " a repairability score from 0-10 has to be displayed at the point of sale for smartphones, laptops, televisions, front-load washing machines, top-load washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and pressure washers."

Ideas: First Nation science and historical knowledge re: fire management - Lightening the Land. Based deeply burned land, restoration work by people of that land. But Boreal forest and fires have their history and impact of recent fire suppression + rising average temperatures and frequency of extreme weather events.

Do you own a home or cottage on a lake in Northwestern Ontario? Then you will be interested in an information session about the threat of blue/green algae to your property values and the use of your lake.

The session will be held Thursday, June 19th at Trinity United Church at 30 S. Algoma Street. The event begins at 7 pm.

Our speakers will be experts from Lakehead University and the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority. They will discuss how climate change is intersecting with our desire for suburban lawn aesthetics, including the use of fertilizer, to create conditions that allow for blue/green algae to thrive.

The experts will talk about the effects of repeated annual blooms on area lakes and the long-term damage to the quality of the water in our lakes.

We’ll also hear how cottage owners can “re-wild” their lakefronts by replacing lawns with deep-rooted plants native to this region to help slow down the run-off of nutrients into our lakes.

One of our speakers will be a local grower of deep-rooted plants indigenous to Northwestern Ontario.

The event is being organized by Trinity United along with the Loon Lake Waterkeepers Conservancy, a new group dedicated to protecting water quality.

Loss structure, function composition = vulnerable and less effective homes & resources. Urgently need to shift from forest management as a product to harvest, to a wealth to build, support and benefit from without cutting it down.
