News of Welcome Climate Action in NWO:

Seven Ontario Youth took Ontario Gov't to court in 2018 saying province's decision to roll back it's climate action jeopardizes their constitutional right to life. Ontario's Superior Court ordered a new trial last Christmas. The Province appealed that decision with the Federal Supreme Court. That appeal was held last week & the Federal Supreme Court decided the Province could not get out of this, the youth's argument is strong and needs to be heard, and now it will be. Seven young people fighting seven years now to hold the Provincial Gov't Accountable for the cost of their Governance Decisions on the future we all share. Thank you! Wow. Pushing for systemic change from within can feel Sysyphisician, but this group keeps regrouping and getting this important point back onto the Agenda. Big News. Legal experts say the case could clarify whether governments in Canada have any constitutional obligation to protect Canadians from climate change (to quote the CBC article you can find on my blog). Of the seven Madison Dyck and Shelby Gagnon live here in Thunder Bay. Thank you friends and neighbours.

Cinco de Mayo - thought focus on cultural rooting into your place, your history and your home. What I thought Cinco de Mayo is all about for Mexicans. Then I looked it up. The Cinco de Mayo is not as big a deal in Mexico as in the US. Kind of like St Patty's Day and Ireland. Also like St Patty's Day, it's high profile in the US seems to be in no small part thanks to alcohol advertising. But although St. Patty may never have had a snake to drive out of Ireland, Cinco de Mayo marks a true driving out of aggressive invaders.

Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Pueblo in 1862. Fifteen years earlier than that battle, Mexico fought for its independance against the United States. Shortly thereafter it suffered a civil war, with the country divided between those that believed Mexico's leadership should be closely tied to the Catholic Church, and those that believed in religious freedom and the division of church and state. Three years into that civil war, with the country on the brink of bankruptcy, France decided to annex Mexico, to claim it as "Latin America", which for them meant allied more with the Latin Language countries of Europe than with the English and Germanic roots of the United States. The Mexicans were not delighted at the prospect of becoming a secondary state, subservient to French interest, and fought for their sovereignty.

I've got to pause here and ask - does this sound at all familiar my 51st state rebel friends?

Was Mexico weary and divided when France first announced their plans to take them over, then invaded. Civil War my friends, three years into it - can't get more divided than that.

And yet, when their sovereignty was challenged, the Mexican's united. The French landed in Veracruz and pushed towards Mexico City, with an army twice the size and way better equipped than poor, long embattled Mexico. Then, a few terrible, bloody months later, 4,000 beat 8,000 much better equipped soldiers. Mexico won, two to one.

On May 5 1862 the Mexicans decisively defeated the French.

That is the anniversary celebrated on the Cinco de Mayo.

According to a poll of over 1500 Canadians done April 14-21 - most Canadians are concerned that the Trump administration may attempt to seize our water, that they believe nature should be funded in order to ensure its protection and preservation, and that those harming nature through commercial activities should not be subsidized

Build Connection to Land & Nature - Attended conference at LU Thurs & Friday (lunch & radio-alternative while at work) biology PhD, post-Doc & Masters. Energy-generation potential in Algae; nature-mimicking technology innovations; using micro-buddies to decompose back to their core (and therefore non-toxic) elements things like tires and leachate from dumps - and even the so-called forever chemicals like we use to coat non-stick frying pans, for instance. The better we pay attention to nature, the more we are both humbled and empowered.

SunDay has been officially launched - a day celebrating solar and wind power and leaving fossil fuels behind - will take place on the weekend including Sunday, September 21st. Sun and wind are already the cheapest: we need to move them from "alternative energy" in people's minds to the cheapest and only logical energy. Check Bill McKibben's post for inspiration. We could have a bike and e-bike parade, climate art installations, a climate or proportional representation rally - propose something and commit to leading or co-leading it, and we'll make it happen!

We now have an official chapter of Fair Vote Canada in Thunder Bay. Fair Vote Thunder Bay!! Only a system of proportional representation will:

- make every vote count

- produce governments that genuinely reflect the will of Canadian voters

- eliminate false majority governments

- eliminate the need for strategic voting

- reduce partisan hostilities and flip-flop legislation (on important environmental issues, among other things)

To support the goals of Fair Vote Canada, which is a non-partisan, non-profit organization, they can find out more by visiting fairvote.ca and/or sign the Declaration of Voters' Rights at https://secure.fairvote.ca/en/declaration

Longest Ballot Protest in Carlton - Pierre Polievre's riding. 91 candidates, 85 of them protesters responded to the Longest Ballot Committee's posts on social media looking for volunteers to run in designated ridings as part of an electoral reform protest.  https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/longest-ballot-protest-carleton-riding Volunteer because they believe the current system — first past the post — needs to be reformed to elect governments that better reflect society and voters. Members of the Longest Ballot committee collected the necessary signatures (each candidate must submit signatures from at least 100 residents of the riding). “All I had to do was fill out the electronic forms on the Elections Canada site and prove I was the actual person and qualified to run.” Many had done this more than once before: municipal, provincial, bi-elections. Initiative to add a garden to the Habit!

The St. John Street Community Garden Expansion Project - Go Fund Me:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-st-john-street-community-garden-expansion

With the support of representatives from the City of Thunder Bay and Scotland Morrison, Lead Pastor of The Urban Abbey, we are raising funds to expand the footprint of the community garden and build a new garden to serve the Urban Abbey's Community Meal program. Funds permitting, we also hope to install a learning garden, permaculture, a seating area, and herb and pollinator gardens. All funds raised will go directly toward purchasing plants, topsoil, gravel, compost, mulch, and building materials.

Best of all, The Urban Abbey has pledged matching funds to make your dollars go twice as far!

Your one-time, tax deductible donation will enhance and beautify the greenspace and deliver fresh, shelf stable produce directly to the Urban Abbey's meal program for years to come. The community garden and the Urban Abbey kitchen garden will be flanked by perennial beds overflowing with Milkweed, Coneflower, Switchgrass, Little Bluestem, Chives, and Black-Eyed Susan, all grown from seed. Also awaiting transplant are hundreds more veggie and herb seedlings that have been growing since early April: Squash, Cucumber, Zucchini, Cabbage, Tomato, Basil, Rosemary, Oregano, and Thyme.
